I have always said I need to keep a notebook by my bed for those late night ideas, inspirations and perfectly crafted sentences just pop in my head as I am trying to nod off to sleep. I will do it for awhile and then one day the notepad is moved to another room and lo and behold Bamn! inspiration hits after lights out.
Without fail whenever I tell myself, oh I will remember in the morning and right it down then, I don’t, at least not to the wonderfully perfect phrase that moved me the night before. So alas, what should be a habit of keeping a notebook on hand at all times comes and goes.
I started a quote book when I started teaching five years ago. Think of it as my own collection of “Kids say the darndest things” ala high school. They’re having been some funnies and with the wonderfully eclectic mix of people the media arts program attracts you can always count on great characters and great “overheard in the classroom” material. But like my nightstand notebook, the classroom note book is who knows where.

When I arrived at Eastside five years ago my classroom was a blank canvas, literally. There were six computers, two white boards and one bulletin board tucked away in a corner.
You get the idea by looking at the backdrop of this photo from a staff birthday party taken that first year.
My effort to personalize the space all started with a plant that is still on my desk thriving.
One by one I added a little something here and there.
Including original art from former students which I treasure.
A Wall of Winners recognizes students achievement and serves as motivation for others.
Now I am tackling the mess that is… THE CONTROL ROOM.
It was a mess when I got here. Years of stuff piled up on shelves and in boxes. Each year I have cleaned and purged. I have finally reached the point I am able to get in and get this room to the space I envision it for broadcast production. It started a couple weeks ago taking down shelves and priming them so I can cover up the dreary wood with something more aesthetically pleasing.
I am in the middle of the painting process. But somehow when you tackle a project like this, it seems to always look worse before it gets better.
With the three day weekend ahead, I hope to finish the painting so this room will be one step closer to completion. As we say in the business, stay tuned.
Turn on the news, read the headlines, and listen to people talk. It’s easy to get discouraged about opportunities for success in the job market. But if you harness what is right at your fingertips, in many ways, the opportunity for exposure and ultimately success is greater now than I have ever seen in my lifetime.
This article Hot Pod introduces us to a college student who created his own newsletter about the booming popularity of podcasting. With a clever title to grabs attention and the content to back it up, he has thousands of subscribers and is looking to parlay it into a money making business. How did he do it? He simply pulled out his computer and put his thoughts out there for all to see.
That’s really all it takes these days. Our computers give us a world of tools at our fingertips to produce videos, podcasts, blogs. You provide the content and with one simple click it’s out there for all to see. And if it’s good, it will spread. That is how many people are making a name for themselves these days and I think that is amazing. Gone are the days of sending your work through the U.S. mail to potential employers hoping they will even see your work. Every TV station I worked for the news director would have boxes, piled high with resumes tapes (later as technology progressed, DVDS!) The majority of them were never viewed and tossed into the news room for anyone who wanted to take them home and record their favorite shows on them for viewing. I am dating myself here. Obviously this predates on demand recording on your cable. It was tough to get noticed no matter how talented you were.
I encourage everyone to find their voice be it through writing, videography, podcasting, or photography. Put yourself out there and find your audience. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
